Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) focuses on ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all. This goal is especially crucial for Somalia due to the unique challenges and opportunities it face in the realm of education.

Despite progress in recent years, significant challenges remain in ensuring access to quality education for all Somali children.

One of the main challenges to achieving SDG4 in Somalia is the lack of access to education, particularly for marginalized groups such as girls, children with disabilities, and those living in rural areas. According to UNICEF, only 30% of children in Somalia are enrolled in primary school, and the country has one of the lowest literacy rates in the world. To address this, it is essential to prioritize education in national development agendas and allocate sufficient resources to ensure that all children, especially those in marginalized communities, have access to quality education. Another challenge is the lack of qualified teachers and adequate learning materials. Many schools in Somalia suffer from overcrowding, poorly trained teachers, and a lack of basic learning materials. To address this, it is essential to invest in teacher training programs, provide schools with the necessary resources, and develop a curriculum that is relevant and responsive to the needs of Somali children.

Despite these challenges, there have been significant efforts to improve education in Somalia. The government, with support from international partners, has developed a national education strategy aimed at improving access to quality education for all Somali children. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and community-based organizations (CBOs) such as Baraarug Library have also played a crucial role in envisioning a Somalia where every child has the opportunity to develop literacy skills, and access quality education.

By prioritizing education, investing in teacher training and learning materials, Somalia can ensure that all children have access to quality education and contribute to the country’s long-term development and stability.
