We’re launching a campaign to address the critical issue of adult literacy in urban cities across Somalia. Despite efforts to improve education in Somalia, illiteracy remains a significant challenge.
According to UNESCO, the literacy rate in Somalia is indeed low, with estimates varying between 20-40% literacy among adults, and significantly lower rates for women compared to… And these disastrous numbers are not to change within short. Additionally, we have one of the lowest school enrolment rates in Africa, which hinders our children’s access to quality education and literacy development. The overall primary school enrolment rate was estimated to be as low as 16.9 percent for Somalia; 20.8 percent for boys and 12.7 percent for girls. In future generations, therefore, the literacy rate will be even lower.
It is crucial that the Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education prioritize adult literacy programs and allocate resources to ensure that every adult in urban areas has the opportunity to acquire essential literacy skills. By investing in adult literacy, we can empower our mothers, strengthen the society, and contribute to the overall development of Somalia.
Join us in calling on the Government of Somalia to make adult literacy a top priority. Together, we can create a more literate and prosperous future for all Somalis. #SDG4″
